The 11th step was introduced to me for the first time in 1991. I did not know
much about prayer and meditation. I was having some problems understanding
what prayer and meditation were. I really was attracted to meditation and tried
different kinds for a few years. Searching for a deeper meaning of meditation for
so long and not being able to find the right one, I stopped because I was afraid and
confused and didn't understand the meaning of it all. But I persevered in my
prayer asking for some light and understanding and I did find it.

A friend called me to ask me if in the town where I lived needed school bus
drivers. Funny enough they did and her cousin who was looking for a job moved to
my town. She called me to invite me to lunch to thank me for her new job. We
started talking about our lives and interests and really connected. We had a lot in
common. I talked to her about my desire to learn about meditation and learned
that she had been meditating for years. She was in a meditation group that we had
in town that I did not know about.

She became a very good friend and teacher. She introduced meditation to me in a
very gentle way. I had told her about some bad experiences I had searching for an
understanding and meaning of the 11th step. She would read to me the reading of
the day from her prayer book and after we would meditate on the reading. She
was like a mother reading a bedtime story . When she thought I was ready to go to
a Christian meditation group she invited me to the one we had at the church. I
loved it. The teaching of John Main was a good way to deepen my understanding
of the 11th step.

The teachings of the 12th steps programs are for me a new life, back then and
now. I'm presently going through some new transition in my life and the 12th
steps are the way for me to deal with life changes . Also the serenity prayer is a
great help when life gets overwhelming.
